It’s a cherry tomato which is grown in the Vesuvius National Park, on the slopes of the crater, benefiting from the volcanic soil and all the mineral substances contained in it. The name Piennolo derives from an ancient conservation technique according to which whole bunches of tomatoes, harvested between July and August, are intertwined with each other (the piennoli) and hung from the ceiling of dry and ventilated places. This procedure gives the product an unmistakable sweetness as well as a characteristic acidic aftertaste. Pizzutello, in its two red and yellow variants, is preserved both whole “natural”, in water and salt, and cut into fillets and dipped in its own juice, the famous “Pacchetelle”.
