We collect Goods and Services Tax (GST) on behalf of GST-registered brands in New Zealand to help them meet their local tax obligations. GST may apply to your orders based on where the brand is shipping from.
As a retailer in New Zealand, you can place two types of orders on Faire:
Domestic orders: The brand is located in New Zealand and ships within New Zealand.
International orders: The brand ships from outside New Zealand (ex: from the US to New Zealand).
How does GST work for domestic orders?
If a GST-registered brand in New Zealand ships an order within New Zealand:
We collect 15% GST at checkout.
The GST amount appears on your invoice and is automatically paid to the brand in their order payout.
If the brand is not GST-registered, we won’t charge GST on the order.
How does GST work for international orders?
If a brand ships goods to New Zealand from outside the country, GST is generally not charged by Faire. Instead:
We’ll estimate duties and taxes at checkout when applicable.
Final duties and GST are usually determined and charged by New Zealand Customs on import.
If the value of goods is NZ$1,000 or less:
Faire doesn’t collect GST.
Most imports under NZ$1,000 won’t be charged GST at the border.
If the value of goods is over NZ$1,000:
You’ll need to pay GST on import.
The brand’s carrier may collect customs duties and GST when delivering the goods.
Can I claim back GST on imports?
If you're GST-registered in New Zealand, you can usually claim back import GST as an input deduction in your GST return. Accepted documents for claims include:
Customs import entry statements
Payment invoices from customs
For more details, refer to Inland Revenue’s guidance on claiming GST for imports.
What if my order is over NZ$1,000, but each item is under that amount?
If you buy multiple items, each worth less than NZ$1,000, but they’re shipped together as one consignment and the total customs value is over NZ$1,000:
The entire order will be subject to import GST.
GST will be assessed and collected at the border.
