CHOOSE YOUR TYPE AND AMOUNT ABOVE. A SOUL LIFT CACAO EXCLUSIVE… Mitla was our first-ever Mexican cacao! It’s grown in Chiapas near the southern border, in the historic cacao cultivation town of Soconusco. The seeds are taken to the nearby state of Oaxaca, where they’re toasted and peeled by Zapotec women in a small village east of Oaxaca City. It is named after the Zapotec archaeological site near where it’s prepared, which historically was an important ritual site considered to be a portal to the underworld! Profile: Savory, buttery blend of 5-day fermented and “washed” (unfermented) cacao. NOTE: The photo of traditional "metate" stone grinding is to demonstrate how it's still done at home in Oaxaca. For more info about us and our partners, visit our Sources page. DIRECTIONS To make a drink of ceremonial cacao, finely chop the cacao. Measure 1/4 cup ground cacao and 6-8 oz of hot water (steaming but not boiling). Mix with a blender (with caution!), handheld frother, or other agitator to fully melt the cacao. Optional: Add a dash of cayenne pepper and natural sweetener to taste. Enjoy! Cacao can also be added to smoothies, oatmeal, ice cream, and other foods. Experiment with making your own chocolates or bliss balls!
