Rodin's first life-sized sculpture The Age of Bronze (L'Age d'Airain, 1876) was initially exhibited in Belgium where he created it. It was so perfect that the critics immediately accused the relatively unknown artist of having used life casts. Striving for the perfect representation of the human body was perhaps a consequence of the fact that Rodin modeled the work right after returning from a trip to Florence where he had admired the masters of Renaissance Sculpture.
