Sylvia Rivera glass votive candle. Celebrate the legacy of trans/queer trailblazer Sylvia Rivera. Proceeds from the sale of this candle benefit Sylvia Rivera Law Project. Candle is hand-poured with soy wax and burns for approximately 10 hours. Glass votives are 2.5in high and 2in wide at the base. Each votive is affixed with an opaque sticker with an image of a person and on the opposite side, a translucent sticker with biographical information about the person. Stickers are water-resistant. Sylvia Rivera (1951-2002) was an activist who fought for the rights of low-income, trans and gender non-conforming people, sex workers, and people of color. A trans woman of Puerto Rican and Venezuelan descent, Sylvia grew up on the streets of NYC and advocated for homeless youth through-out her life. In 1970 Sylvia and Marsha P. Johnson founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries. STAR worked to feed and house their community and participated in demonstrations for queer rights.
