Our hobby is collecting hobbies, and when we found coffee roasting something instantly clicked Our original goal was to steer away from sugary coffees as we often found ourselves questioning what we were actually drinking if we have to add all this extra stuff just to make it taste decent. We wanted something that tasted good without adding, sugar, cream, flavor syrups (sometimes even all of the above). So, like all hobbies, we began to research what gave coffee its flavor. Could there really be coffee beans that brewed a good cup of coffee without needing additional flavorings? We went on a hunt - from local supermarkets to big named grocery stores to small coffee shops to craft roasters, we realized the coffee got better and better as we went further and further away from the distribution process. After getting locally roasted beans and having the BEST cup of coffee we thought we could ever have, we started to think about ways we could make it better ourselves and and how we could control the variables. Several books and online forums later, we started the pursuit of home coffee roasting! A messy, inconsistent batch of coffee beans later we have successfully roasted coffee beans ourselves! But it wasn’t pretty. Some were light, some were dark, and some even came out burnt. It was smokey as heck and to be honest quite terrible.
