After becoming a victim of sexual assault, Asahela Rose began making candles as a way of feeling present and coping with her trauma. Now, it’s a fully-fledged business that she runs alongside her daughter –Shamaya 14. “I was a single mum to three children, working long hours and coming home to look after the kids. I felt quite lonely. I loved my job but the demands of the role became overwhelming..It was at this time Asahela experienced the sexual assault that she describes as rattling to her very core. It was in a trauma therapy group where Asahela found some solace, specifically in a trinket bag she was given to help ground herself and feel present when she began to dissociate due to the trauma. “It was odd. I was in a room full of women all from different backgrounds and life experiences yet having trauma in common. And we all found some form of relief in these little trinkets. The flicker of a candle light on the wall helped remind me that I’m still here and the powerful scent of lavender brought me peace”. During this time Asahela began making her own candles as a way of handling her trauma, which her daughter took an interest in too. It wasn't very long until others took an interest in the products and Asahela began building her brand around the use of essential oils, mind-fullness and grounding techniques.
