Dust II Onyx: A Melanated Tarot is a living tapestry, weaving ancestral memory with the pulse of today’s Black Diaspora. This 78-card deck reimagines tarot through the lens of Black culture, spirituality, and history, offering imagery and interpretations rooted in ancestral wisdom while reflecting the complex beauty of modern Black life. I didn’t set out to make history — I set out to make something I needed. A tarot deck that could hold the weight of Blackness, in all its beauty, contradiction, and spirit. When I created Dust II Onyx, no decks existed that spoke to the fullness of that story. So I decided back in 2016 to be the first Black artist to create one. Each card is a hand-crafted mixed media painting, layered with materials like acrylic, oil paint, sand, glitter, and collage. The guidebook serves as both a compass and a conversation — unpacking the symbols, traditions, and cultural stories held within each image. More than a divination tool, Dust II Onyx is a cultural artifact — a work of art and spirit that belongs wherever people seek stories that refuse erasure.
