Co-founder Heidi Meka opened Onatah Cafe, in the mid-2000s, offering quality garden based food and retail products. Partnering with Lauren Draus in 2018, Onatah Cafe became Onatah Seed Co. where they began to focus on making gardening accessible to everyone with our signature, Garden in a Box. Friends for over fifteen years, co-workers in restaurant and retail businesses, they knew partnering in a company of their own was a recipe for success. Heidi’s background in business operations and Lauren’s background in events and public service allowed them to compliment each other as Onatah Seed Co. took shape. What most fueled their brand creation was their dedication to making accessible products. As a novice gardener Lauren loved the idea of having gardens but each year didn’t know where to get started or how to keep going. With years of gardening experience growing food for herself and her cafe, Heidi was looking for a way to bring fresh herbs and plants into the lives of those she loved. “I never found what I was looking for. So many grow kits have vague directions, or used terms I didn’t know. I like specifics. Not just ‘add water’, I was always asking well, how much water? And I would never have a bag of soil to get started. They just never seemed to be what I wanted.” said Lauren. “Heidi was forever giving me gardening advice. She is an expert gardener.
