23 Tree Studio is a watercolor art supply and lifestyle boutique in Castle Rock, Colorado. I design the paint sets, brushes and accessories, and I sell them in my own shop alongside a curated selection of other watercolor brands — so I see every day which supplies people pick up and which ones they put back. The studio began with a return to painting after a long stretch of not making anything: large abstracts on oversized raw canvas I stretched by hand. The scraps became something else — tiny landscapes mounted on saved upholstery velvets with a pearl-topped pin and 23 karat gold leaf. Both the jewelry. That is where the name comes from: 23 karat, and the single trees those first paintings became. I still paint them. They are small batch and sold only at the shop. The products came from a gap I kept running into. I wanted beautiful art supplies and accessories to sit alongside the watercolor workbooks I was stocking — things made for painting, journaling, and the practices that take us out of the busyness of life. Not for technology. The gold stayed, which is why the logos are gold and the metallics run through the packaging. The Juliette organizer has been the surprise: retailers are merchandising it for bullet journaling, embroidery and other analog hobbies as well as watercolor, which makes it easy to place in more than one part of a store.Read their story
