Laura Burkett Designs is a collection of carefully handcrafted leather goods that pairs supple, full-grain leather with brightly-hued textiles to offer accessories and home decor items that burst with energy, individuality and style. It all started when I had the chance to live and work in Italy for three years for a US study abroad program. I was so profoundly inspired by the level of style and craftsmanship demonstrated by the country's artisans and designers - their leather goods in particular - that I knew I had to dive in, learn as much as I could, and start designing some of my own pieces that improved overall functionality while preserving the aesthetics of line and shape. I worked with a local cobbler to bring my initial design to life - a computer backpack called 'Zaino' (Italian for backpack), learning all the best places to source leather, accessories, tools, etc., and perfecting my Italian in the process. My mentor spoke no English so there was really no way around it. While the process of learning a language can be at times painful, I'm forever grateful for the gift of still being able to speak it. I could write a book on all the zany capers that took place while bringing those initial samples to life, but that's for another day. It was an incredible, life-shaping period - with a side gig that turned into a full-fledged (albeit small) business. I'm proud to now be offering a full line of goods that are "Inspired in Italy / Made in the USA."
