Working from a tiny California apartment, the founder set out to build products rooted in joy, confidence, and real community. The story truly began in 2015 when her sensitive pits pushed her to switch to natural deodorant. Every option left her irritated, red, or smelling by noon. After researching the problem, she learned that baking soda found in many natural deodorants can disrupt the underarm’s pH balance, which often leads to irritation and odor. She believed natural did not have to mean less effective, so she started formulating her own deodorant that would be gentle and reliable. Her breakthrough came with magnesium hydroxide, a mineral that helps neutralize odor without disturbing the skin. Through testing and small batch making, she created a deodorant that finally worked for her and for thousands of customers looking for a better option. By 2025, Terra and Self made the decision to focus fully on their hero product, deodorant. All deodorants are handcrafted in small batches in California, free of synthetic fragrances, and scented with signature essential oil blends made in house. Their refill system features a durable tube made from recycled plastic and compostable refill cartons that make repurchasing easier for customers and retailers.
