About Kahawa 1893

Kahawa 1893 is the first nationally distributed Black- and woman-owned coffee company in the United States. We source specialty-grade coffee beans from woman-owned farming cooperatives in East Africa and give back to support them. In Kenya's coffee farming industry, women own only 1% of the land but compose 90% of the workforce. Although African farmers produce the most celebrated and in-demand coffee in the world, their labor is not adequately compensated with global prices below the cost of production. Women are disproportionately affected. Our founder, Margaret Nyamumbo, grew up on her grandfather’s coffee farm in Kenya and witnessed firsthand the vital role women play in the coffee industry and the inequities they face. That experience shaped her purpose. After travelling to the US and graduating from Harvard Business School and Smith College, she decided to contribute to her country with the mission of changing the coffee industry.
