Based in Fenton, MI, Jan Blough started her company, Silhouettes and More, 20 years ago and has grown to selling her work throughout the United States. Before she started designing silhouettes and turning them into ornaments, Jan was a mechanical engineer with a master's degree from Michigan State University and did her thesis in biomedical engineering. Jan took a hiatus from her career to be a stay-at-home mom. While raising four children with her police officer husband Mark, Jan started looking for ways to make some extra money for the holidays. While fixing up their old (1870) house for a historic home tour, they came across a ledger inside a wall and decided to turn it into wall art that told a story. Jan cut out a silhouette of what she imagined the original homeowner to have looked like, and used the old document as a background. She then framed it and hung it on the wall. When she got a lot of attention for the piece, Jan decided to turn her craft into a business. Soon her creative side took over as she combined her silhouettes with her knowledge of stained glass and love of old handwriting. She introduced her own unique beveled glass, handmade, silhouette ornaments soon afterwards. Jan and Mark, now retired, craft the ornaments using lithographs of Jan's hand-cut silhouettes on authentic 18th/19th century papers. The artwork is held in place by applying a hand soldered edge. Black or red ribbon finishes off each ornament. Each piece tells a story!. Read their story
