The back of the button is smooth. What is Galalith? It is a semi-synthetic plastic called milk stone because it is made from cow's milk casein. This thermosetting material was developed at the end of the 19th century. It is a very time-consuming material to produce but very easy to work with in engraving and dyeing, among other things. That's why it was widely used in button making. These buttons wash very well, provided they are not left to soak in water for several hours.
