He joined the British Army in 1895 and was elected to Parliament in 1900. During WWI, he was First Lord of the Admiralty (until the ill-fated Gallipoli Campaign) and in 1917, feeling remorse and the need for redemption, he joined the Royal Scots Fusiliers and served on the Western Front in the front lines.
