Description

The dark, wine-purple olive most people picture when they think "Greek olive" — that's this one. Vagio Agrofarms Kalamata-Type Olives are made from the classic Kalamon variety, the same cultivar that gives Kalamata olives their global reputation. A quick note on the "type" in the name: "Kalamata" is a PDO reserved for olives grown in the Kalamata region of the Peloponnese, so olives of the same variety grown elsewhere in Greece must be labelled "Kalamata-Type." Same cultivar, same character — different postcode, correctly declared. These are produced by the Vagio family at their farm in Agios Mamas, on the Halkidiki peninsula in northern Greece — the same growers behind the Vagio Agrofarms olive oil range and green olive line. The olives are picked ripe, brine-cured the traditional Greek way, and packed whole with the pit intact for maximum flavour. You get a firm, meaty, glossy dark-purple olive with the tangy, gently wine-like, almost fruity edge that has made this variety a Mediterranean staple for centuries. Because they are cured to full maturity rather than harvested green, these are richer, softer, and more layered than the Halkidiki greens — proper companions on a shelf, not substitutes. Why we love them - 100% Kalamon variety — the classic dark Greek table olive - Grown by the Vagio family in Agios Mamas, on the Chalkidiki peninsula - Ripe-picked and brine-cured the traditional Greek way - Meaty, glossy dark-purple olives with a firm bite and rich flavour - Tangy, gently wine-like character with a soft fruity finish - Vacuum-sealed 250g pack for freshness - No artificial preservatives or colours How to enjoy them The classic Greek salad olive — you know that one. Beyond it: fold into a proper tapenade with capers and lemon zest, add to slow-cooked lamb or chicken braises, scatter onto pizza with feta and rosemary, or serve on a cheese board with hard sheep's cheese, sundried tomatoes, and warm bread. Excellent with a glass of full-bodied red — Xinomavro, Agiorgitiko, or a Rioja Reserva.
