Additional Information This print from the original painting by noted American artist and museum curator Rembrandt Peale is based on an Anglican poem about mortal man's call to death. It remains a significant example of American neoclassicism from the nineteenth century, a time when American painters were not yet held in the same regard as their European counterparts. Peale's father, also a painter and curator, introduced his young son to George Washington in 1787 while working on a portrait of the first President of the United States. After the death of his mother, Peale began drawing at the age of eight and completed his first self-portrait at thirteen.
