History & symbolism Its name comes from the Greek "amethystos," meaning "not drunk" — the Greeks believed it protected against drunkenness and carved amethyst cups for this power. Known as the bishops' stone in the Middle Ages, a symbol of spiritual wisdom and sobriety, it adorned mitres and episcopal crosiers. In Buddhist tradition, it is among the sacred stones of Tibetan malas. Traditional virtues According to crystal healing, Amethyst is traditionally associated with peaceful sleep and the easing of nervous tension. Practitioners attribute calming properties to it, useful for accompanying periods of stress or mental agitation. It is reputed to promote meditation and access to a serene state of mind, linked to the crown chakra. The stone Amethyst is a violet quartz (SiO₂), with a trigonal crystal system, and a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale.
