“Punica granatum”, originally from Asia Minor (Persia and Afghanistan), the pomegranate and its fruits arrived in Europe thanks to Phoenician merchants. The name derives from 'apple' because it reminds of its shape and color and 'grain' because of the internal consistency of the seeds, very similar to corn. The protagonist of countless stories and legends, in the Greek world this plant was sacred to Juno and Venus. In ancient Rome, brides braided pomegranate branches in their hair, a symbol of fertility and wealth. The greatest splendour in art and culture occurred in the Renaissance, a subject present in Caravaggio's works and the fruit used to make Italian and European banquet dishes unique.
