Gustav Klimt was not only Egon Schiele’s mentor but also a sincere friend. He is said to have been the one to introduce him to Wally Neuzil, who soon became his model and lover. In 1912 Schiele was arrested and the police confiscated hundreds of his works because of their sexually explicit content. Seeking to settle down, he decided to marry Edith, a young woman from a respectable bourgeois family. At first he believed he could continue to see Wally even after the marriage, but neither Edith nor Wally shared that view. Wally died in 1917 and, the following year, in the autumn of 1918, the Spanish flu struck Vienna. Edith, six months pregnant, died from the virus. Schiele followed her three days later. He was only 28 years old.
