During the years she experiences more than a fair share of cruelty and misfortune, but also friendship and romance, in situations and locations closely resembling those the author herself is known to have experienced in her youth. The modern reader is struck by the undercurrents and meditations related to topics like religion, autonomy, gender and social class. These themes remain as vital and important as ever. We include a section on Charlotte Brontë’s life and background, including select chapters from the biography written by her close friend Elizabeth Gaskell after her death, originally published in 1857.
