Monk's pepper is common in countries around the Mediterranean Sea. The blossoms of this plant produce seeds that resemble black peppercorns. Monk's pepper owes its name to the fact that the berry looks and tastes like "real" peppercorns. Furthermore, the name monk is included because in the Middle Ages the berries were often used by monks to flavor their food.
