This "Corpus Christi" Crucifix is the highest expression of sacred art from Val Gardena, combining the emotional intensity of the representation with unparalleled sculptural mastery. The polychromy, created with the traditional oil coloring technique, gives the complexion a pale and realistic tone, in dramatic contrast with the wounds highlighted by vivid red shades. The elegance of the Baroque is manifested in the cross: a dark-stained wooden structure, whose trilobed ends are embellished with a thin frame of shiny gold or brass, enhancing its shape. Particular emphasis is given to the loincloth (or cloth of purity), treated with a rich gold leaf finish, creating a voluminous and brilliant drapery, symbolizing the regal dignity of Christ even at the moment of sacrifice.
