Greenland Shark (Somniosus microcephalus) — One of the ocean's great mysteries, this cold-water giant of the Arctic and North Atlantic is believed to be the longest-living vertebrate on Earth, with lifespans estimated at 250–500 years. It grows and matures at a glacial pace, moves sluggishly through icy depths, and its flesh is toxic unless specially fermented — the basis for Iceland's infamous hákarl.
