Medieval evidence shows an archaic maiolica with geometric or vegetal decorations in green and brown. But the fame of the city's ceramic tradition is linked to the great ceramist Giorgio Andreoli, known as Mastro Giorgio, who arrived in Gubbio in 1489 from Intra on Lake Maggiore. It was the art of applying lustre, of which Mastro Giorgio was the undisputed master, that made Gubbio ceramics famous: gold, silver, green and above all a beautiful intense ruby red.
