Handmade desert bell from India. Age-old tradition of bronze bell craftsmanship. Each bell is shaped and fired by hand, then individually tuned. Boho decor accent. Hand made and fairly traded in India. This is the Size 10 bell here. It measures 6.25" in height. Sizes 10, 12, and 13 are large sized bells. The sound of them makes one hold one's breath for a moment. This size 10 bell is one of my personal favorites. These bells are made by Janmamad Luhar in the Kutch desert region of western India. Janmamad employs an ancient technique of bell-making, passed on to him through generations. Janmamad's brother and uncle, as well as the women in the family also participate in the making of these bells. The bells are formed from sheets of recycled steel. They are shaped, riveted without welding, then dipped in a copper slurry. Women make a dough that they pat around the bells to protect the metal during the firing process; the bells are then buried under the hot desert sand in a kiln and fired for three days. The heat anneals the metals, welding them into bronze, giving each piece its unique patina. After firing, the protective dough is chipped off, and each bell is individually hand-tuned. From the smallest 'size 0' bell, to the largest 'size 13' bell, to every bell in every chime ... each bell is individually hand tuned to perfection, using an age-old technique! This is what truly makes each of these pieces and truly unique! At Indika, we offer these bells in ten different sizes. This is the Size 10 bell. These are the approximate heights of the bells: • Size 0 = 1.35". • Size 2 = 2.25". • Size 3 = 2.45". • Size 4 = 3". • Size 6 = 4". • Size 7 = 4.75". • Size 8 = 5.25". • Size 10 = 6.25". • Size 12 = 9". • Size 13 = 12". Also, in case you're wondering why we skip certain sizes, eg size 9 and size 11, it is because they are too similar in size to the ones above or below them. We skip sizes 5, 9 and 11 for this reason.
