Tabasco is celebrated as the birthplace of chocolate and the heart of Mexican cacao cultivation. The Tabasco lowlands were home to the Olmecs, Mesoamerica’s “Mother Civilization,” who built the region's first pyramids and coined the ancient word “kakawa.” Over 3,000 years ago, this ancient society became the first to domesticate and drink cacao. Today, Tabasco proudly honors that unbroken heritage, remaining Mexico's most vital cacao-producing region and a premier center for fine, artisan flavor. Our Tabasqueño origin comes from Comalcalco. This single-estate bean comes from one single farmer named Malaquías, with the assistance of agronomic engineer Carlos Vasquez Zambrano. The cacao is grown in an agroforestry system interspersed with other plants such as tropical flowers, timber trees, citrus, pepper, and mangos.
