Wholesale Satsuma porcelain jewelry box with Kannon and Rakan Buddhist deities, seigaiha decoration

Covered porcelain box in Satsuma style, square shape with rounded corners. Polychrome decoration with gilded highlights on a mahogany-brown ground. Dimensions 9 x 9 cm, height 4.5 cm with lid closed. The lid is adorned with three Buddhist deities with white halos, shown in bust on a brown background punctuated with gold dots and a scale pattern. In the center, Kannon (観音, goddess of compassion), elaborate hairstyle topped with a floral diadem, holding a pearly wisdom jewel. Dark green jacket with orange floral motifs, blue sash. Above her, a manji (卍) in a white medallion, the Buddhist swastika symbolizing eternity and good fortune. To the left, a Rakan (arhat), an old man with a bald skull, bushy eyebrows, austere and meditative expression, maroon-brown robe with green motifs. To the right, a second Rakan, an elderly man with marked features and white hair, bright orange robe with green motifs. The three figures are rendered with meticulous care, expressive faces, richly detailed garments with raised brown beads. The sides of the box and lid are decorated with a seigaiha (青海波) motif, golden fish-scale waves on a brown ground, with raised green clouds. This motif, one of the most emblematic of Japanese ceramics, symbolizes peace and prosperity. Gilded lines on all edges. Plain white glazed interior. White base with kiln mark in iron red, cursive Japanese characters (attribution to be confirmed). Satsuma style refers to a Japanese ceramic with a finely crackled cream glaze, ornamented with very fine polychrome and gilded decoration. Originally produced in the Satsuma province (Kyushu) since the 17th century, this style experienced considerable growth in the Meiji (1868–1912) and Taisho (1912–1926) periods, when Japanese workshops produced for export to Europe and America. Pieces decorated with Buddhist deities on a brown ground are among the most sought after by collectors. Very good condition, gilding well preserved. To display on a desk, in a cabinet of curiosities, or in an Asian art collection.
