From the Silk Roads to museum display rooms These two stirrups in solid carved wood are direct witnesses to the equestrian craftsmanship of the great caravan regions of Central Asia. Their incised decoration, executed with remarkable precision — fan palmettes, interlaced pointed arch arcades, rosettes, geometric lattices — is characteristic of the ornamental vocabulary of the major artisanal centers in the Bukhara and Samarkand regions in the 19th century. An exceptional carver's work Every surface is covered with recessed decoration of striking fineness: the radiant central palmette, friezes of rosettes, stacked pointed-arch arcades and the triangular frieze at the base attest to a craftsman possessing a complete command of the Islamic decorative repertoire. The wood — dense, tight-grained, mulberry or walnut from the region — has developed a deep, even patina over decades of use.
