The hand-woven baskets are named after the remote Binga district – home to the Batonga tribe. The larger baskets are still used for their original purpose, which is to 'wine' grain. The Tonga population is a minority that makes up about five percent of the Zimbabwean population. In 1957 they were evicted from their traditional settlements to make way for a dam on Lake Kariba. Now they live split up in a large area prone to drought and poverty. The Binga Craft Center in Zimbabwe, which was established by the Danish government to continue traditional crafts, helps Tonga women to make the intricate pattern of these baskets using traditional weaving technique.
