Use: bay leaves have always been used as a condiment, but also to prepare herbal teas to improve digestive function. Currently, medical use is obsolete and the plant is used almost exclusively as a flavor in the kitchen. Essential oil, tannins and bitter substances are part of the constituents that give the leaves the characteristic aromatic smell and, when chewed, a bitter and somewhat acrid taste.
