Poverty of especially the women in the area was the driving force in the initiation of this project. Education levels and work opportunities were and still are extremely poor, aggravated by the lack of employment. Very often the women are left to fend for themselves and their children while the men migrate to the cities in search of work. The vision is to empower women of the area by providing them with a means of income. Wezandla is the Zulu word for hands and represents the work of the artisans. Traditionally known for their beadwork, the artisans skills have grown to include sewing, embroidery and screen printing. Currently 30 women are involved in the project and each product requires a team of artisans to produce it--from hand printing to sewing to beading.
