The P-51 was developed in a remarkably short time and was built around the Packard V-12 engine, capable of delivering over 1,600 horsepower, allowing the Mustang to exceed 700 km/h. The P-51D, the most widely produced variant, was armed with six 12.7 mm Browning machine guns mounted in the wings. It was extensively employed on the European front, primarily escorting bomber formations but also serving as a fighter-bomber for ground attack missions.
