Description
Jessie Willcox Smith (1863–1935) was a Philadelphia–born illustrator celebrated during America’s Golden Age of Illustration. Trained under Thomas Eakins at PAFA and later Howard Pyle at Drexel, she rose to prominence with children’s and family imagery. A founding member of the “Red Rose Girls,” she shared life and studio with Violet Oakley and Elizabeth Shippen Green. Smith illustrated over 60 books—*Little Women*, *A Child’s Garden of Verses*, *Evangeline*—plus nearly 200 Good Housekeeping covers (1917–1933), magazine stories, calendars, and ads for Kodak and Ivory Soap. Renowned for tender, nostalgic portrayals of childhood, she became one of the era’s highest-paid illustrators before her eyesight declined in the early 1930s.
