There is a fascinating tradition in modern French art: capturing scenes and subjects from everyday life in Parisian restaurants, bars, parks and other places of entertainment. André Derain’s painting depicts a dancer from the restaurant and nightclub Le Rat Mort (The Dead Rat). Half-dressed, the dancer sits with her stockinged legs crossed, slouched on what appears to be a bed, her gaze meeting ours directly. ANDRÉ DERAIN'S Woman in a Chemise, 1906 has often been featured as a striking centerpiece in publications posters, and other contexts due to its powerful visual impact.
