Recognized for her outstanding contributions to history education, Wunneanatsu was named the 2024 National History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. An enrolled citizen of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, Wunneanatsu brings lifelong connections to the Indigenous communities throughout Indian Country, deeply rooted in southern New England where she was born and raised. Wunneanatsu's passion for preserving and sharing Indigenous histories and teachings was inspired by her grandmother. Trisha B. Waters grew up in Indiana, where she noticed a disappointing lack of diversity in the media she consumed. Upon graduating with her BFA in illustration from Indiana University in 2016, she vowed to help underrepresented children see themselves and their cultures in the books they read.
