Yule is a Norse and Germanic tradition, one of the oldest Sabbats in terms of documented practice. "Jul" in Old Norse referred to a midwinter festival lasting twelve days, a period that mapped directly onto the Christian Twelve Days of Christmas. During this time, the boundary between the living and the dead was thought permeable, and the Wild Hunt, a spectral procession led by Odin, was said to ride across the winter sky. The Yule log was a massive piece of oak, traditionally lit on the solstice and kept burning all twelve nights. A piece of the previous year's log was used to kindle the next, an unbroken chain of fire connecting each winter to the one before it. Holly and ivy brought indoors at Yule were not decorative in origin. In northern European folk belief, keeping living green things inside through the darkest season sheltered the nature spirits from the cold and ensured their goodwill come spring. The solstice is the longest night. After this, even by minutes, the light returns. Every culture that has lived through winter has found a reason to mark this night.
