La Concha de Peregrino is known as the Pilgrim Shell which marks the way on all the routes of the Camino to Santiago. There are many theories of how this shell became the symbol of el Camino de Santiago but in the Middle Ages upon arrival to Santiago de Compostela when the pilgrims received their certificates, they were given a scallop shell to put on their hat or cape as a tribute to the Apostle Santiago. Nowadays you see them everywhere, pilgrims hang them off their backpacks and in Galicia there are homes and even a church on Isla de la Toja completely covered in them.
