The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, the moment when the sun reaches its highest point and begins the slow return toward darkness. The Latin word "solstice" means "sun stands still," and for three days around the solstice, the sun appears to rise and set in almost the same position, pausing at its peak before turning south. Midsummer fires burned across Europe from Scandinavia to the Iberian Peninsula. In some traditions, the height of the leaping flames was said to predict the height of the flax crop. Wheels of straw were set alight and rolled downhill into rivers. Dew gathered before sunrise on the solstice morning was believed to carry healing properties, particularly for eyes and skin. A lesser-known piece of midsummer folklore: ferns were said to bloom only once a year, at midnight on Midsummer's Eve, and whoever found the fern flower could read minds, locate hidden treasure, and move unseen through the world.
