Our handmade clay brooches are individually decorated using a technique which makes each a unique item. This piece can be used as a brooch or a shawl pin. It has a powerful magnet on the back and can be used through multiple layers of fabrics. Perfect for supporting fine lace weight crochet or knitwear and superlative for weavers (no pin). This magnetic device solved the infamous "Shawl Hike." Once placed, stay placed. Before the pieces is fired, a mica infused clay slip is applied to the piece. The piece is then fired for the first time to attach the material to the pin. Using alternative techniques to working with clay is a hallmark of LickinFlames. Our work is primarily experimental and in some ways that's what makes the work so playful. The piece takes several weeks to dry and then the finishing can take place. When the pieces are removed from the kiln, feathers are carbonize into the surface and the color is revealed. Then the piece is cooled, each is washed, dried and an appropriate magnets are attached to finish the piece. And just before it's sent to you, the piece is packaged in it's own gift box. Even though we carefully fire each piece in the same manner, variation occurs and gives unique qualities to the piece.
