The shapes and patterns may slightly vary from one stone to another. Also called Corsite or Napoleonite, orbicular diorite features characteristic spherical structures called orbicules. Its chemical composition is intermediate between a diorite and a gabbro. The light minerals are calcium plagioclase feldspars of the anorthite and bytownite type, the dark minerals are hornblende-type amphiboles as well as pyroxenes. It is known that orbicular diorite was used to make the tomb of Napoleon I at Les Invalides and the Medici funeral chapel in Florence.
