A very pretty Sarreguemines earthenware serving dish, likely made around the 1930s–1940s, whose decoration has that particular presence of French earthenware from the interwar period. On the ivory background unfolds a large rose in red-orange and yellow tones, surrounded by foliage rendered in subtle gradations of gray and green. The design is broad, almost theatrical, but the whole retains a pleasing sobriety thanks to the simple red line that follows the rim of the dish. It is precisely this contrast that gives it its character: a classic form, intended for table service, enlivened by a much freer, more modern floral decoration. It also tells of an era when French manufactories knew how to give everyday objects a true decorative identity. The reverse bears the marking Maréchal Miel - Sarreguemines, testimony to its French production. At 31 cm long by about 22 cm wide, the dish has pleasing proportions: substantial enough to serve as a table platter without being cumbersome. It has lived and does not try to hide it. Its surface shows scratches and signs of use, particularly visible in the basin, as well as a few age-related marks. The decoration remains, however, clearly legible and retains all its strength. This rose. Generous, slightly old-fashioned and yet terribly decorative today. It’s the kind of piece that doesn’t need to be precious to have character: it simply carries with it the charm of the fine tables of yesteryear.
