A psychiatrist by training, he directed the hospital in Blida, Algeria, where he treated both victims and perpetrators of the colonial system. A keen observer of the psychological ravages of imperial domination, he denounced its mechanisms: acculturation, alienation, identity devaluation. A theorist of de-alienation, he advocated for total emancipation—mental, cultural, and political. An active militant of the FLN, he put his pen at the service of struggling peoples, authoring major works such as Black Skin, White Masks and The Wretched of the Earth.
