Original peoples of South Africa, the San and Khoi are the first connoisseurs of the use of Rooibos (a leguminous bush), as an ancestral remedy for a wide range of diseases. Its needle-shaped leaves are rich in antioxidants (Aspalathin). They could reduce hypertension, relieve allergies, be beneficial for the skin and adequate in case of kidney stones. Spending hours pacing the Cederberg Mountains to find the optimal plants, the San and Khoi harvested them, crushed them with stones, fermented them in heaps, and then dried in the sun. Rooibos remained unknown to the rest of the world until 1772, when it was presented to a Swedish botanist. Its true potential came in 1904, when a Russian immigrant became interested in it and decided to trade with the locals.
