One of the most iconic lighthouses in the US, Portland Light Head lies just south of Portland, Maine, on the unforgiving rocky shores of Cape Elizabeth. Completed in 1791 to mark the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor, you can imagine the graveyard of ships that would exist without the lighthouse marking the shore for the ships over the centuries.
