Elizabeth of York has often been overlooked by Tudor historians in favor of her son King Henry VIII and his six wives, as well as her granddaughter Queen Elizabeth I. However, Elizabeth, daughter of King Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville, deserves more recognition. She suffered the loss of her younger brothers, the Princes in the Tower, and lived through the reign of her uncle King Richard III, who allegedly plotted to marry her. Born when women in power were not desired, she could have been England’s first queen regnant. Her position as heiress to the House of York solidified her husband’s claim to the throne. When she married Henry VII, they united Lancaster and York. Contrary to the belief that she was weak, Elizabeth held sway over her husband and was a respected, influential queen. As the mother of the Tudor dynasty, she was a devoted mother and adored queen.
