Description
The Piece This mid-century table lamp features a cased opaline glass body with a softly graduated peach-to-cream ombré, a finish prized for the way it transforms light into atmosphere rather than illumination alone. Produced circa 1950s, the lamp reflects a post-war design moment when traditional silhouettes remained familiar, but materials and color palettes moved decisively forward. The baluster-shaped form is restrained and classical in outline, yet the glasswork introduces warmth and modernity—an intentional balance that defined much of early mid-century lighting design. The glass is not surface-colored or painted. The ombré effect is achieved through true cased glass, with color embedded within the body itself. When unlit, the lamp reads as sculptural and calm. When illuminated, the glass blooms with a soft internal glow, deepening at the shoulder and fading gently toward the neck. This is lighting designed for rooms that favor mood over brightness—bedrooms, sitting rooms, libraries, and corners meant to be inhabited rather than passed through. The lamp is fitted with period-appropriate brass hardware showing natural age and wear. The pleated shade shown is later but correctly scaled and sympathetic in tone, providing even diffusion and completing the silhouette without competing with the glass. Design & Construction → Mid-century European production → Date: c. 1950s → Cased opaline glass body with integrated peach ombré → Classical baluster form with rounded shoulder and tapered waist → Period brass socket and hardware with natural patina → Weighted base for stability → Shade included (later replacement, proportionally appropriate) Every element reflects quality mid-century manufacture—materials chosen for longevity, form refined through use, and color applied with restraint rather than excess. Historical Context In the years following World War II, lighting design shifted toward warmth and intimacy. Glassmakers explored new color transitions and internal diffusion techniques, moving away from heavy ornament while retaining elegance of form. Lamps like this were designed to bridge generations—modern enough to feel current, familiar enough to feel permanent. Cased opaline glass became especially popular for its ability to soften light and add depth without glare, making it ideal for residential interiors where atmosphere mattered as much as function. Condition Very good vintage condition. The glass body is clean and intact, with no cracks or structural damage observed.
