Description
Serpentine Serpentinite Mineral – lime yellow-green, sometimes patterned. Serpentine begins life as an ultramafic rock (igneous rock mainly found at the ocean floor) that is pushed into the Earth’s mantle by tectonic activity. Sea water then mixes with the Magnesium, and as the deposit is subjected to huge pressures, Serpentine minerals are formed. For this reason, it is commonly found in Magnesium-rich igneous rocks along the crests and folds of the Earth’s mantle – particularly Alpine mountain chains and island arcs. It is named after similarities in texture to a snake’s skin, particularly due to its waxy lustre and many hues included within its matrix.
