The terminal caitula are conical and yellow or red in color. Bud leaves and flowers have a pungent peppery flavor that is stronger in open yellow flowers. The flowers in particular are slightly anesthetizing: the effect produced is very particular. In Morondava the name kimalao recalls the spiciness of chili, because malao means “that which stings and heats up” at the same time. The leaves can be used fresh or dried.
